Responding to Disaster

Australians are no strangers to natural disaster, as Dorothea MacKellar wrote in 1904, ‘I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains, of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains’. Currently we suffer both drought and bushfire raising questions as to how we, as contextual thinkers, can respond to such events.

Jan Breckenridge and Kerrie James (2012) suggest that traditional therapeutic responses assume a focus on individuals, their families and symptoms of post-traumatic stress and fail to appreciate the ‘therapeutic or mediating role of social or community support in surviving trauma’. The authors suggest that community based interventions encourage a more holistic vision of resilience and recovery and in recognising the trauma  is experienced by a whole community can offer support and intervention at this broader level. They conclude; ‘Facilitating relationships beyond the immediate family ought to be within the scope of family therapists as it is certainly within their skill base.’
