Internet addiction is an increasingly common presentation by parents of adolescents and one they feel helpless to understand or influence. It is ‘characterized by excessive and compulsive Internet use and a preoccupation with and loss of control over this use that interferes with individuals’ daily functioning’.

Research has demonstrated that positive communication with parents and good relationships are protective factors for adolescents while family involvement in intervention facilitates recovery and helps maintain change. Authors  Qin-Xue et al explored the efficacy of Multi-Family Group Therapy, an intervention grounded in systemic  theory, to address internet addiction. 46 parent-adolescent pairs participated in the study with addiction rate dropping from 100% to 4.8% at the conclusion of the group and remaining at 11.1% at three month follow-up. Improved parent-adolescent communication and needs satisfaction in life appeared to be factors associated with this change.
