“I think that it’s particularly valuable for people who do work with families, I think there’s a lot that you can take from this course to enhance your knowledge”

“From day one you hit the ground running in this course by observing what’s actually happening in a clinical setting and by the time you can catch your breath you’re actually invited into the room to participate in one way or another, but always in the safety of knowing that you’re supported by senior practitioners, and you’re not expected to do something that you don’t feel safe doing. You are encouraged to participate and stretch your boundaries all the time. You’re not only in the room with a senior practitioner, you have an observation team who are watching on the video, with the clients knowledge of course, and whenever there are times that you might feel stuck, you can leave the room and have conversations with people who are having different thoughts and ideas about what might be suggested, or assist you in moving forward. You always feel like there’s a team of you, you’re not on your own.I’d recommend it because I looked around for a long time for something that would add completely new learning to what I already had in place. I didn’t want to be doing something just for the qualification or just for the pieces of paper, I wanted something that would challenge me, stretch me and add to the skills and strategies that I already have”

“I found this course a lot more detailed, thorough and extremely helpful in my learning. I’m a social worker working in the field already and I’ve found that the practical component of the course, working with families, and building up my learning as well as the reflective component, the theory component and the workshops a really great learning experience, compared to maybe other courses where it’s been mainly theory. More practical but integrating the two, I have found very useful,I think that it’s particularly valuable for people who do work with families, I think there’s a lot that you can take from this course to enhance your knowledge”

“I particularly like that we have the Bower model that fits in so well. To have the opportunity to see that in action with the staff that are here has been a really good time, I’ve learned so much”

“With the professionals that work in this clinic you can gain so much information. I think the actual client contact is something that you would not get in any other diploma, so I would definitely recommend it”

Samantha, Bower Place Student, Diploma of counselling 2016

“This would be a good model that would fit the way I like to do learning. It was very, very hands on, which is a lot better than doing it online, and doing a lot of theoretical stuff,I like practical things. I think the practice aspect that’s emphasised here is really important, and I think doing this course is a good way of learning because you just don’t immerse yourself in the theoretical evidence. You can get really bogged down in that sometimes. The value of learning through that practical element is that you’re working hands on with what you’re going to do in the real world of the counselling process,I’d probably say that if you really like to do something that’s realistically based, in terms of what you would be doing in the field, this is probably a good way to go, and I think it’s a really good process”

“When I found out it was on an evening rather than the block placement, doing the face to face over a shorter period of time, I found that was more suitable for me because I work full time”
